In a session that started at 13:33 hours in the Senate of the Republic, a raffle was held to choose candidates for the Judiciary, where curious moments were experienced. While Fernández Noroña opted to have a coffee, Jorge Carlos Ramírez Marín, vice president of the board, entertained himself eating cucumbers.
The first round of the raffle to choose candidates from the first district in male criminal matters resulted in the selection of Irving Luna Hernández. Surprisingly, an additional raffle was decided to select a female candidate due to the notification of a registered applicant with an indistinct gender but a female name, who was included in the selection.
A gender confusion situation arose during the selection of candidates, leading to the balls being returned to the urn and the process repeated in some rounds. However, Stephanie Quintero Trejo was automatically selected as the candidate for the position of district judge in criminal matters.
A total of 68 positions were drawn, including ministers, magistrates, and judges. For some positions, such as that of ministers, there was only one draw, since vacancies for women were filled by the number of registered applicants. In the case of the magistrates of the Superior Chamber of the Electoral Tribunal of the Judiciary of the Federation, only three of the five registered candidates will be elected.
The draw process, supervised by Notary 35 of Mexico City, Eutiquio López Hernández, lasted for six continuous hours. Although the opposition was absent, Fernández Noroña thanked them for their collaboration and pointed out that it would not affect the process. The Electoral Tribunal of the Judiciary of the Federation requested the Senate to conduct the selection through a raffle, following the suspension of its evaluation committee by order of a judge from Michoacán.
The judicial election process, which was carried out in compliance with a resolution from the Electoral Tribunal of the Judiciary of the Federation (TEPJF), began with a two-hour delay and without the presence of the opposition. Despite certain complications, the first candidates for the 2025 election who would be nominated by the Judiciary were successfully selected.
